Express Yourself:
Discover Your Inner Truth,
Creative Self, & the Courage to Let It Out
by Joy Lynn
Freeman, D.C., Ph.D.
(cand), 1999
The first thing
that attracted me to this book was its cover art of a powerful,
triumphant woman rising up in the funnel of a tornado. Maybe you
can't always judge a book by its cover, but in this case I believe you
can. This is a terrific book for helping you make positive,
profound changes in your life. Joy
Lynn Freeman understands the complexity of reasons we keep ourselves
paralyze under a pile of "should," dependencies and self-criticism.
She addressees each stumbling block that we face along our journey to
wholeness with compassion and makes clear the choices available to those
who want to change. Freeman
sums up her philosophy in this way:" The more we know our
truth and are able to express it responsively to ourselves and others,
the more our lives begin to creatively express who we truly are, rather
than some idea of what we should be." In her "Try
It" sections at the end of each chapter, Freeman offers practical,
enriching, eye-opening exercise that will help the diligent seeker to
change behaviors and attitudes. Some of these exercises would be
best done in a group setting through most can be some
individually. Such
issues as confronting your shadow self, disarming the inner critic,
learning to feel your feelings, and uncovering beliefs that shape outer
circumstances have been addressed in many other books. But while
none of the concepts in this book is especially new, Freeman presents
them with such clarity and conviction that is quite inspiring. The
number of superior exercises offered in this book would make is it an
excellent choice for individuals who are ready to commit to radical
changes in their outlook and behavior and for workshop and retreat
leaders looking for ideas for helping their clients attain powerful
results.
